The following are some ideas for home owners to see their homes with an objective perspective:
- Try examining your home with binoculars from close by and from further away. You will be surprised at some of the details and compositions that you haven’t noticed before.
- Focus on your front door. A door that is located at the center of the house may indicate a balanced arrangement of rooms on either side of a central hall. Are the windows arranged in a pattern? Do window frames match each other? Different alignments may point to an addition or remodeling. Is the trim at the corners and the roof line consistent from one portion of the house to another?
- Think of the house in two dimensions. Generally, a home should have a series of perpendicular lines on each plane. Is the roof line straight or does it dip in the middle? Are the side walls straight?
- From a distance, can you detect any signs of roof deterioration? Does the chimney, if you have one, stand straight and tall?
- The north side of the house will be subject to more weathering, as the warming and drying of the sun exaggerates the effects of wind and rain. How soon will a paint job be needed? If the walls are of brick or stone, is the surface in good condition?
- Do the windows have peeling paint? Is there missing or cracked putty where the panes of glass join the frame?
- Is the foundation of uniform material and finish?
